Martinustoren Gennep

The Martinus Tower Vistor's Centre is situated on a location with an extraordinary history. More than a thousand years ago the first church was built here. Due to the strategic location between the rivers Maas and Niers and being also in close proximity of the Rhine, the Maas and Niers countryside ( called: The Land of Maas and Niers) has a special history. A history one can encounter in the charming landscapes of the Maasdunes, the Maashedges and in the Moraine of Mookerheide (a vast heath), the St Jansberg ( a nature reserve with hilly landscape) and the Reichswald Forest.

The exhibition in the Martinus Tower - entry free of charge - deals with the cultural history as well as the landscapes. The steeple tower more or less invites the visitor looking down from the tower over the landscapes to go out and explore these landscapes, either by bicycle or on foot.

With the help of texts, photos and film(s) this website gives you information per topic about the various subject-matter. Short films will give you an impression of the cycling routes. The routes can be found by clicking on the related link. Subsequently you can download the routes as a PDF file. In the routes are also available as GPS routes. Per topic a short documentary is also given so that you can understand what you are seeing and thus can enjoy the Land of Maas and Niers to the full : the beauty of the natural scenery as well as the cultural history. It is also possible to visit the website on your Smartphone and tablet/notebook. During your cycling or walking venture all sorts of information can be viewed and heard. For example, during the cycling route of the Liberation Route you can stop at one of the audio spots marked by a large boulder. Here you can listen to a radio play or watch a movie about the civilians and soldiers who lived and fought here in 1944-45 In the proximity of the Visitor’s Centre Martinus Tower there is ample parking space free of charge (Melkstraatje), including parking spaces for campervans. The Tourist Information Centre (VVV) and the museum “het Petershuis” are situated in the direct vicinity of the tower. On this page you will find 2 short films: an introductory film to the exhibition in the tower and a film about the history of the tower. We wish you an enjoyable visit!
